A omega baryon is a baryon that is made up of three strange quarks.

The omega baryon was used to test the theory that ordinary matter is made of quarks (and electrons).

The quark theory only works if there are omega baryons with just the right properties. When the theory was invented, nobody had seen an omega baryon, but then people did experiments which made the omega and showed that it had the right properties.

Without the omega baryon, we would not believe that quarks are building blocks of the universe.
